My Students

I am teaching ninth grade students in my biology classes at Alta High School this year. They are open, fun-loving and most have the desire to do well in school. It has been exciting to work with these students who are eager to learn and experiencing high school for the first time.

It is very different, teaching freshmen than older students.

One thing that I find is that many of these students are leaving resource classes for the first time. They have been receiving resource services since elementary school, but parents have chosen to let their students be fully mainstreamed in their classes receiving no services. These low-skilled or resource students want to learn, but feel frustrated with the way instruction is delivered in a school setting. Some are reluctant to ask for extra help, or to be identified as being a resource student, or having some kind of learning accommodation. Many don't advocate for themselves, don't feel success in the classroom and disengage from the learning process. Of my 175 students, 25 have been identified as resource students. Many others are low skilled and would qualify for resource but are not receiving services due to parental request.

My Project

I envision my students using the tablets with either peer tutors, on their own, or with a partner. Materials will be uploaded to the tablets that are specific to the objectives that are being taught in class. Students will be able to access the content and move through it at there own pace. At prescribed stop points students will demonstrate their understanding of the concepts. They will proceed through the materials only after they show their understanding of the objectives.

I believe having these tablets available for students will be highly motivating to them.

They will be able to learn the objectives of the course in an individualized way that will help to build success and confidence. Resource students can learn, but they don't believe they can. By having content delivered to them that is customized to their learning needs, they will be successful and build on those successes in other areas of their life.
